Biography
Chairman of the Board of Directors and former CEO (1994-2009 retired) of Martin Marietta Materials, Inc., which consists of Aggregates Company, a leading producer of crushed stone, sand, and gravel for use in construction, and Specialty Products, which produces lime for steel making and chemicals.
Grew Martin Marietta Materials from revenue of $450 million to over $2.2 billion with share price increasing from $20 in 1996 when the company went public to over $168 per share.
Chairman and majority owner of ZP Enterprises, a private firm founded in 2009, with three manufacturing companies that specialize in precision machining and coatings.
Serves on the boards of U.S. leading homebuilder Beazer Homes and Pace Industries, a leading U.S. producer of nonautomotive aluminum castings.
Actively involved with advisory boards of Georgia Institute of Technology and North Carolina State University; served as past chairman of the North Carolina Chamber, North Carolina Independent College Fund, and Peace College.
In 2011, received the North Carolina Distinguished Citizenship Award from the North Carolina Chamber. Also presented the Carolinas Lifetime Achievement Award for Entrepreneurship.
A native of Savannah, Georgia, received his B.S. in Industrial Management from Georgia Tech, and M.S. in Administrative Science and MBA from the University of Alabama system.
Served three years in the U.S. Army as an explosive ordinance disposal officer.
